What does it mean to remember a past you can no longer fully recall? In Remember? Remember, artist Lex Marie invites viewers to explore the beauty, complexity, and sometimes uncertainty of childhood memories through a deeply personal collection of paintings and mixed media installations.

Presented by Arena Social Arts Club in 2021, Marie’s first solo exhibition featured 15 paintings and two installations inspired by photographs, childhood report cards, certificates, and other personal mementos. Through vibrant pinks, nostalgic imagery, and layered compositions, Marie reconstructs fragments of her girlhood while reflecting on family, Black identity, and the places and experiences that shaped her.

Beneath the collection’s playful colors and seemingly innocent portraits lies a deeper story about memory, belonging, and the importance of preserving Black history. By revisiting moments from her childhood, Marie transforms personal memories into shared experiences, inviting viewers to reflect on their own histories and the stories that shape who they become.
