About the Exhibit
Laced with Culture is a collection of sneakers made of found objects, reflecting, everyday lives, using everyday objects found in the streets. This is a collective group of the most collectible sneakers in the world ranging from 1982 - 2025, created over a span of 8 years, using repurposed materials, collected from over 9 states.
By placing sneakers within the gallery space, this exhibition elevates everyday objects into cultural artifacts. Laced with Culture invites viewers to reflect on how something worn daily can carry history, signal community, and express valuesβreminding us that culture, like laces, is tied together by shared stories, movement, and meaning..
Artist Bio
Inspired by his grandfather who was blind, Reginald Gillumo is a self-taught artist from Washington, DC whose pieces effortlessly leap beyond the canvas and can be felt, and in some cases, heard. Utilizing a wide range of found and recyclable objects, such as, Bluetooth speakers, melted crayons, spark plugs, newspaper clippings, carpet patches, imported oils, and more, Gillumoβs 3rd dimensional body of work indulges all five of the human senses. Gillumo prides himself on crafts that appeal to the visually impaired, demonstrating that art can be absorbed and enjoyed in spite of oneβs ability to see.
A product of public education, Gillumo has devoted his lifeβs work to ensuring that other gifted children in the District understand the art of hustle and grind, in order to push their works above and beyond. Gillumo is perhaps the best person to impart this knowledge and wisdom to todayβs young artists, having overcome tremendous challenges himself, from imprisonment, homelessness, and being the victim of gun violence, to commissioning pieces for legendary icons likeStevie Wonder and countless public figures.
